Increasing awareness in the fields of security and safety led to the fact that topics such as industrial espionage, IT security as well as health and safety at work have become real mammoth challenges to many companies. The bigger a company is, the more complex is the structure of the security chain. To avoid complexity problems and to guarantee maximum protection anyway, Adolf Würth GmbH & Co. KG trusts in one over-all security system.

The leading expert for construction and fixing material is headquartered in Künzelsau, Germany. Every day, the huge premises are highly frequented by all in all 6.000 office employees, field staff and a lot of suppliers and contractors. Numerous stores as well as an own event and exhibition center in Schwäbisch Hall are also on Würth’s responsibility. In general, the management goes for a visitor-friendly and safe atmosphere. “We need a solution, that meets our high expectations towards safety standards and ensures them permanently,” recaps Marco Hagenmüller, Head of Communication Systems at Würth. One step to support this target is the use of an intelligent video surveillance system on the whole company ground as well as on further selected locations. A consistent cost-performance ratio and the surveillance of the area access are mandatory as well.

In the year 2002 Adolf Würth GmbH decided to replace the analogue system, that had become old and obsolete, by network technology-based video surveillance. Due to monetary considerations, that showed that a current analogue system would have been considerably more expensive, and due to the technical potential, that could only be realised by a digital system, the management came to that decision. Especially the great flexibility of IP video played an important role to ensure that the system’s development would always be in line with the company’s growth. Another advantage was, that the existing infrastructure could still be used. For the video management software Würth decided to trust in the solution world of Qognify. Crucial for this decision was the software’s scalability and flexibility. From 2011 on, Würth already started to benefit from the modular approach of the Cayuga Multi Solution Platform. Third party systems like access control or central management systems can be easily docked to the existing system. Further features such as video analytics or license plate recognition can be integrated as well and the number of cameras is infinitely extendable.

At the project kick-off in 2002, 45 analogue cameras were integrated into the new video surveillance system by using video encoders. Additionally 45 network cameras from Axis Communications came into operation. Over the years the number of cameras has been rising steadily. Currently the system manages more than 1000 cameras. They cover the headquarters and different offices as well as other locations, including an airport, a church in Schwäbisch Hall and the Würth exhibition center. Here, the focus lies on the physical protection of the shown artworks. Famous pieces like Hans Holbein‘s „Schutzmantelmadonna” are exhibited on location. A 24/7 security service is needed to safeguard the precious items. Therefore the exhibition center is secured by one staff
member day and night. In addition, two or three employees are responsible for security at the headquarter. The team is supported by the camera recordings, which go easy on storage and bandwidth in the default setting, because of a low image rate. In urgent cases, the frame rate rises automatically to ensure a steady image
stream. The material is accessible from any location. Another important aspect next to keeping an eye on the paintings is the securing of a regulated process in the so called “pick up shops” of the stores. The external stores use a burglar system, which has been especially designed for these cases. In case of an alarm, a signal is sent to Cayuga via an I/O module, so that the system automatically switches into alarm recording mode. Within this mode the control center receives an alarm message and a self-acting feed onto the live image of the affected location. Thereupon further steps to clarify the situation can be initiated by the security staff. For example in case of an intrusion the police will be informed, in case of fire the fire department.

A good sign to show the customer’s satisfaction is the system’s growth over the years: “For more than 12 years the system has been operating smoothly. We have thousands of options and can choose new features or additional cameras instantly – no problem at all with the help of the Cayuga Multi Solution Platform. We have never regretted our decision to trust in Qognify,” says Marco Hagenmüller. He further states: “Our investement was definite worthwhile. Especially the fact that the system is able to grow with the company is very important for us. Würth grows and the video system adapts to the needs.” Not only the systems growth is unabated, a Qognify solution offers numerous application fields. Aside from the mere security applications the implementation of the Cayuga License Plate Recoginition is scheduled and the Qognify Logistics Solution is to be applied in the headquarter, to relieve the company’s staff and to support the business process by employing more video analytics.
