Recently, I attended the ASIS 2010 show in Dallas and stumbled across something that I had heard about but had never before had the opportunity to lay hands on.
First off, you have to understand that I am, without a doubt, a Tech. That means if something technology-wise catches my eye that is wicked cool and actually solves a problem of mine (or an Integrator friend or two) in a simpler and easier way than has been done before, I’m gonna shout it from the mountain tops – and not just because it makes me look smart (although it does). Rather because it really is a better way of doing things.
That being said, you have GOT to check out the wireless generic IP camera housings fromAvalan Wireless. Avalan crammed their wireless point-to-point non-line-of-sight broadcast RADIO solution into aDotworkz outdoor dome housing with heater/blower capabilities. What that means is you can grab pretty much any off the shelf IP camera (fixed or PTZ) and stick it in this housing (which has a PoE injector) and broadcast it up to 1Mbps non-line-of-site for up to 1 mile with a 5.8GHz radio attachment – (up to 40 miles with line-of-sight optional). The transmitter and receiver are matched sets to make setup easy and they don’t interfere with Wi-Fi. It has 128 bit encryption on the transmission with dynamic keys for data protection. But the best part is that it does not require a license to operate or install in the US or Canada.
Now, you need to get power out to it (12VDC or 120VAC) but other than that, this little housing is going to allow anyone to stick an IP camera (fixed or PTZ) anywhere there’s power and get a REALLY good picture at 1Mbps. Translation for all of you non techies out there: that means you can put cameras in places that might have otherwise been too difficult or expensive in the past, cheaply and easily. Mind you, I’m not officially endorsing the product, but everybody I talk to about these housings can see the value in them and for me, that’s the sign of a really great idea/problem solver.
What about you? Have you seen anything cool recently that raised your eyebrows? Any new technology with the potential to solve some problems? I’d like to hear about it…and not just because I can tell everybody else and seem even smarter.
