This will be NICE’s first year exhibiting at the utility industry’s top event, theEEI (Edison Electric Institute) Annual Convention/Expo. The theme for EEI’s 2011 Annual Conference, which will take place at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, June 12-15, is “the Power of Opportunity.” Utilities are exploring new technologies to transform the way they do business – and security is no exception. Building on this theme, NICE will be showcasing its NICE Situator Situation Management solution that helps electric utilities manage their security and operations more effectively and efficiently than ever.
One case in point is how Situation Management can address the needs of electric utilities relative to complying with NERC’s (the North American Electric Reliability Corporation’s) CIP standards. Enforced through NERC audits, the regulations pack a huge punch. Utilities found to be in violation can be fined up to a million dollars a day. To grasp the scope of the challenge, consider that Critical Cyber Assets can be spread across large geographical distances encompassing hundreds of sites, secured through the use of many different, unconnected physical security systems. Another factor compounding electric utilities’ CIP compliance challenge is the current economic climate which puts pressure on utilities to do more with less. CIP can dramatically increase the number of sites that utilities need to monitor, as well as their reporting workload. At EEI, NICE will share insights on how electric utilities can achieve NERC CIP compliance, cost effectively and consistently across the enterprise. We’ll also offer some best practices and solutions to improve efficiency and effectiveness on the operations side.
